KOLAR: Fraudsters have hacked the official WhatsApp number of Kolar district Lokayukta Police Superintendent Antony John and messages were sent to several people stating that Rs 55,000 is urgently needed. As soon as this came to light, Antony John filed complaints at the CEN police station and the Cyber Crime unit in Bengaluru.
WhatsApp messages were sent to everyone who had Antony’s official office number asking for money. The fraudsters sent messages to saying, “I urgently need help, my UPI account is not working properly, if you send ₹55,000 I will return it in two hours, I will send my UPI number”. Some people who saw this message became suspicious and immediately called the SP’s number, but by then it was switched off.
While Antony was hearing grievances at his office, a call came to his personal number. The caller said a courier had arrived, the delivery boy was waiting, and asked him to call the delivery boy from his number, and sent a number. Antony called from his official number, but the delivery boy did not answer.
Meanwhile, friends and acquaintances started calling, asking what problem had occurred since he had sent messages asking for money. SP Antony John said, “As soon as I realized my WhatsApp number had been hacked, I sent my mobile to the CEN police station, and I have also filed a complaint with the Cyber Crime unit in Bengaluru”.
