BENGALURU: A gold trader was cheated of 3.6 kf of gold worth Rs 5.2 crore after the accused fled with the gold after promising to sell jewellery to various gold shops at a higher price.

The accused Rohit Kumar had been doing business with MP Jewel Craft company for the last two years. Initially, he used to take jewellery, sell it, and pay the money. Between July 7 and 20, Rohit Kumar took jewellery on three occasions and sold it at Sagar Jewels and Gajaraj Jewels. He said the money would be paid after the gold was sold.

The complainant, Balaji Abhishek, called the concerned jewellery stores and inquired and was told that they had not purchased any jewellery from Rohit Kumar. At the IndusInd Bank branch in Peenya, a person named Nagesh was working as an appraiser. He created fake accounts and cheated the bank of crores of rupees. Like this, through about 15 accounts, he pledged gold and took gold loans of about Rs 1.53 crore by pledging fake gold through friends. Only the clasp of the fake gold chain was real gold.

When the bank conducted an audit, Nagesh’s fraud came to light. Bank officials threatened Nagesh saying they would get him jailed if he didn’t pay the money. To escape from the fraud case, he introduced a businessman through friends and duped him.

Nagesh told the businessman that gold had been pledged at a low price and had come for auction, and that he would get Rs 40 lakh profit at the current price. He convinced the businessman that the owners would not redeem the gold. Believing the fraudster’s words, the businessman deposited Rs 1.53 crore.

After taking the money, he deposited it in the bank and escaped. Jagadish, who gave the money, filed a complaint at Peenya police station. Police have arrested the accused Nagesh, and sent him to jail.
