CHAMARAJANAGAR: A gram panchayat president resorted to dharna in front of a panchayat member’s house over withdrawal of support at A Devarahalli village in the district on Saturday.

Ashwini, the president of the Gowdahalli Gram Panchayat, and her mother-in-law Mahadevamma proceeded to Devarahalli and staged a protest in front of panchayat member Mamatha Nagendra’s house for allegedly going back on her word to extend support to her.

In the 19-member panchayat, Ashwini was elected president after securing the support of 14 members. However, seven members withdrew their support to her recently.

Ashwini claims that works were undertaken under MNREGA scheme using excavators and she was asked to approve the bills, but she refused. Members are withdrawing support over this issue, she added.

“Mamatha Nagendra had promised to extend her support to me. All along, she promised to stand by me, but now she has gone back on her word and is not even receiving calls.

“Initially, I was told that the term of the president of for two-and-half years. Now they are saying it’s one-and-half years. I need justice”, she appealed.
