BENGALURU: In one of the biggest demolition drives in the city, the Greater Bengaluru Authority launched a drive to remove illegal shops at KR Market on Wednesday amid opposition by vendors.
Several shops were built unauthorisedly and haphazardly under the KR Market flyover and they were demolished using three excavators. Around 150 unauthorised were cleared based on court orders.
North City Corporation Executive Engineer Bhaskar Reddy said, “We are demolishing a total of 150 shops and carrying out the operation as per court directions. These are shops that were built unauthorised and we will complete the demolition in 2 days. No one is obstructing and the demolition is going on with police security”.
Central City Corporation Commissioner Jagadish visited and inspected the demolition drive. “As per court directions, we will carry out the demolition of 150 shops within two days. Footpath clearing work is also going on. We have set a target to clear 250 km. We will also clear these 150 shops”.
Commissioner Jagadish told Public TV, “Building shops and renting them out is a mafia and the Central City Corporation will put an end to the mafia. Unauthorised construction of shops and renting them out is happening and this will be curbed.
Flyover to be partially closed for 3 months for white-topping work
In a major shock for motorists using the KR Market flyover regularly, the road is to be partially closed for the next three months due to white-topping work on Sultan Road in Chamarajpet. The KR Market flyover connects Victoria Hospital, Minto Hospital, Vani Vilas and Chamarajpet Market, and Basavanagudi.
