BENGALURU: The Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) has plans of making the Hennur-Bagalur road signal-free to connect to airport. The civic body will undertake a study and, if needed, the road will be develoed as a signal-free thoroughfare, Greater Bengaluru Development Minister Krishna Byre Gowda has revealed.

Traffic is increasing day by day on road from Hebbal to the Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) and many air travellers are stuck in traffic for hours during morning and evening peak hours. In this background, the government has taken a decision to reduce traffic congestion by developing another alternative road to the airport via Hennur and Bagalur route. It is intended to make this road completely as signal-free road, that means without signal anywhere, people can reach the airport directly.

Minister Krishna Byre Gowda informed that there such a plan before the government. For this, land acquisition has to be done where required. Instructions have been given to officials to conduct feasibility study of this route soon. If this project bears fruction, it will be a boon for the people of East Bengaluru to reach the airport.

The minister has inspected the spot and informed that a decision will be taken in the coming days on how to develop the road. “We have considered the Ring Road-Hennur-Gubbi Cross-Kannur and Bagalur as an alternative road to the airport. Earlier, there was connectivity to the airport only through the national highway, but the traffic is heavy and the toll is also high. We had earlier provided connectivity to the airport through Bagalur road and it is being developed in stages”.

Further, he said the road runs about 18 kms and in 70 per cent of the stretch, it can be widened to six lanes. “At some places, land has to be acquired in KR Pura, Mahadevapura and Byatarayanapura and instructions have been given to officials. Instructions have also been give for white-topping of the road. There are many locals living on this stretch and high-rises have also come up and hence, it becomes one of the important roads in the city. We have to develop it stage by stage. In the meantime, there are many complaints about works being delayed”, the minister said.

Based on the viability and feasibility, this stretch will be made signal-free within the next five years. Also, where necessary, flyover or an elevated road will be developed, the minister said.
