Fed up of illegal sales, mans seeks nod to sell liquor at his grocery store

CHITRADURGA, BELAGAVI: With illegal sale of liquor continuing unabated in several parts of the state, a man from a village in Hiriyur taluk to allow sale of liquor at his grocery store.

Chandrashekar, a resident of Hosanayakarahatti, had written several times to earlier to the Excise authorities to act against the illegal sale of liquor at unauthorised places like small shops. But, with the illegal sale continuing unabated, he has written to the gram panchayat and the Excise department seeking permission to sell liquor at his grocery store.

Chandrashekar also warned that if he does not get permission for sale of liquor, he will start selling liquor in a basket in front of the offices of the gram panchayat and Excise department. His letters to the gram panchayat and the Excise department have gone viral on social media, triggering a heated debate.

The police seized 5,000 litres of illicit liquor during the raid.

Meanwhile, in Belagavi, the police have conducted raids and seized 5,700 litres of illicit liqour at Sonahatti village. The illicit liquor was being brewed in a hilly region.

Police Commissioner S N Mallikarjun said a team of about 150 police personnel, led by DCP Rohan Jagadish, conducted the raid based on specific information. Some houses were also raided, but on seeing the policemen, the accused managed to escape. One of the accused has been arrested and he is being questioned, the commissoner added.
