Five double decker buses to run in Bengaluru on experimental basis

BENGALURU: The Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) is planning to introduce double decker buses on the city roads to provide services to every nook and corner of the city. The Tourism Department and BMTC have decided to jointly operate the buses and a decision to this effect was taken at the last cabinet meeting.

The double decker buses will be operated on clear roads where there are no flyovers, skywalk, cable wires and trees. Double decker buses are already plying in Mumbai. These buses were operating from 1970 to 1990 on some of the main roads in Bengaluru, including Majestic, Jayanagar, Shivajinagar and many other roads. But the service was discontinued later for various reasons.

Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister H K Patil said, “The Cabinet has approved grants to purchase double decker buses. The government has allocated Rs 28.13 crore for the purpose”. He said that the transport department is considerng running five buses on an experimental basis and gauge the public response based on which further decision will be taken.
