The nursery school building collapsed in the wee hours on Monday, damaging two vehicles.

BENGALURU: A nursery school run by the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) on Cooks Road in Shivajinagar collapsed in the wee hours on Monday, leaving a car and a goods autorickshaw badly damaged. Luckily, there were no children or staff in the school at that time. Children who came to the school on Monday morning to attend classes returned with their parents on seeing the collapsed building.

The nursery school has about 90 children studying there. The teachers said that despite several complaints to the BBMP about the dilapidated condition of the building, no action was taken. If there were children in the school when the building collapsed, it would have led to a major tragedy, locals warned.

A teacher said, “Ninety children are admitted to this school and we all left after classes on Saturday. We have lodged several complaints that the school building is weak, but nothing was done”.

Anish, the driver of the goods autorickshaw, which was damaged in the building collapse, said, “I had parked my vehicle in front of the school as there was space. The building suddenly collapsed around 2 am. The autorickshaw was the sole means of our livelihood. We should be compensated for the damage”.
