Constable attacked after intervening in fight

HASSAN: A police constable was attacked with a machete and pelted with stones by a group in a drunken stupor after he intervened in a fight in Malali village of Holenarasipur taluk last Thursday.

The constabl, Sharath, from S Honnenahalli village in Kundur hobli was injured and is being treated at Hassan Government Hospital.

Sharath, a constable at the Yasalur police station in Sakaleshpur taluk, took casual leave on June 15 and went to the Malali temple of Holenarasipur taluk to celebrate the birthday of the daughter of Deepak from the same village.

Mithun, Lohit and Nataraju from Sharat’s village were seen scolding Chethan in foul language and assaulting him in front of Sona-Shreya Convention Hall near the temple around 3.30 pm when Sharath intervened to resolve the dispute.

One of them, Nataraj hit Sharath on the back of the head with a stone and beat him mercilessly with the intention of killing him. Nataraj took a lethal weapon from the car and hit Sharath left eyebrow. Sharath escaped from him, ran inside the convention hall, and collapsed on the spot. Then some people rushed him to the hospital.

A case has been registered at Holenarasipur police station, and the police have taken two people into custody. Further investigation is under way.

A villager, Suresh said, “The exact reason is not yet known. Sharath just intervened in the fight to settle the fight between Chethan and the group. But the group assaulted the constable after drinking liquor at the birthday party. The act of the gang was captured on CCTV camera of the conventional hall”.
