CHIKKAMAGALUR: An 18-year-old college student has succumbed to dengue, marking the first casualty this year in the district. The deceased is Sahara Banu, a resident of Mohammed Khan Galli and a student of MES College.

Sahara Banu had been suffering from fever for the last two months and had even availed medical treatment. However, she breathed her last on Wednesday evening.

Locals pointed out to the unhygenic atmosphere in the locality due to incomplete work on the underground drainage and warned that they would stage protest in front of the civic body if the work is not completed soon.

Meanwhile, Kyasanur Forest Disease (KFD), or monkey fever, was detected in a 55-year-old female patient, taking the count of positive cases to nine. Of them, one person died while four have recovered and four are undergoing treatment at the Koppa taluk hospital.

Cases of KFD have been detected mostly in estate areas of Koppa taluk and the health authorities are taking measures to curb the spread.
