CM Siddaramaiah visits landslide-affected area in Ankola taluk

KARWAR: Chief Minister Siddaramaiah visited the site of a landslide at Shirur in Ankola taluk, where 10 people were reported missing recently. The bodies of seven people have been recovered while a search for the others was continuing.

Despite heavy rainfall, the CM visited the landslide-hit area and conducted an inspection of the restoration work. Revenue minister Krishna Byre Gowda, Uttara Kannada District In-charge Minister Mankala Vaidya, MLA Satish Sail, Chairman of the administrative reforms Commission R  V Deshpande,  Deputy Commissioner Nitish Kumar Singh and other district officials accompanied the CM.

So far, seven bodies have been recovered, and three more are believed to be trapped under the debris. The CM announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh to the families of the deceased.

He also assured that the rescue operation is ongoing, with the help of the army and navy. The CM denied any delay or negligence on the part of the state government in responding to the disaster.

After inspecting the place, the chief minister spoke to the media and said, “Despite the rain, the rescue operation is under way. The reason for the delay is that the rescue team had to wait for the rain to subside. So far, seven bodies have been recovered, and the search operation for the remaining three is ongoing. We have sought the help of the army and navy for the rescue operation. Military operations will begin soon”.

He further said, “We have announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh to the families of the deceased. There has been no delay or negligence on the part of the state government in responding to the disaster. We started the rescue operation as soon as the incident occurred. The district in-charge minister, DC and SP are present at the spot and are overseeing the rescue operation. I will not politicise the issue, and I will not blame anyone. I have appealed to the central government for help. Our government has not delayed or neglected the rescue operation. We have acted swiftly”.
