Bescom mulls registration camps in rural areas for Gruha Jyothi scheme

BENGALURU: With just about a week left for registration for the Gruha Jyothi scheme, the Bangalore Electricity Supply Company (Bescom) is planning to conduct enrolment camps in rural areas to increase registration.

Ahead of the Assembly election, the Congress had promised 200 units of free power to all domestic consumers if it came to power. The new government has already opened up registration for the Gruha Jyothi scheme and so far 1.30 crore consumers have applied for it. The power utility plans to enrol another 80 lakh consumers by July 25 so that they will not have to pay their power bills from August.

However, Bescom has noticed a slackening of pace in the rural areas and plans to enrol as many consumers as possible. Under Bescom jurisdiction, over 40 lakh people have registered for the Gruha Jyothi scheme. After approval from the minister, the power utility plans to hold registration camps for the benefit of illiterate people, those facing internet connectivity issues among others.

Bescom managing director Mahantesh Bilagi said, “Our power utility covers eight districts including the BBMP limits and over 42 lakh consumers have registered so far. Under all the Escoms, 1,03,00,000 registrations have been recorded. Earlier, registration was slow due to the load, but now there is no problem and registration is smooth. We will discuss with the minister and hold registration camps”.
