BENGALURU: The tech city, already infamous for traffic jams, is in the news again over traffic. Bengaluru, which had earned the notoriety of being the world’s most congested city, is now in the news again for traffic after ranking No.1 in the country.
The latest TomTom traffic index report has revealed that Bengaluru is the No.1 traffic city in India. Compared to 2024, Bengaluru saw a 1.7 percentage point increase in average congestion in 2025. It takes 36 minutes to travel a 10-km distance in Bengaluru.
According to the average time, commuters in the city take an average of 36 minutes 9 seconds to cover just 10 kilometres. A shocking fact is that vehicle users Bengaluru spend a staggering 168 hours a year, i.e., about seven days, on the road stuck in peak-hour traffic.
During rush hour, the average speed of vehicles drops to just 13.9 km per hour. Compared to 2024, this has increased significantly in 2025, and it is likely to increase further in the coming days. Apart from Bengaluru, Kolkata secured the second position. In Pune, it takes 33.20 minutes to travel 10 km, placing it in third position.
TomTom, a navigation technology company, studies traffic conditions in various cities across the world and publishes a traffic index every year. In the 2025 report, Bengaluru has been listed as the city with the highest traffic congestion in the country.
