BENGALURU: The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has planned to replace the existing sodium-vapour streetlights with new LED lights to curb energy wastage  in the city.

Forty per cent of the streetlights in the city have been replaced with LED lights.

In many areas of the city, streetlights have sodium vapour lamps, flouroscent tubelights and CFL bulbs. In several places, there are poles for streetlights but there are no bulbs, while in other places, poles and streetlights need to be installed. Many citizens have also complained about the unavailability of streetlights in some areas of the city. The police say that the lack of proper streetlights is one of the reasons for the crimes in the city.

The project to replace streetlights with LED bulbs will be beneficial for citizens as they are brighter, while it will also curb energy wastage and help save 60 per cent on the electricity bill. Around 40 per cent of the streetlights in many areas of the city have already been changed to LED bulbs.

BBMP Special Commissioner Ravindra.

“The police department had identified dark spots in the city and had advised us to install streetlights in those areas. In some of the dark places in the city, we have already installed LED streetlights, which are helpful to citizens and also keep the electricity bill low. So far, 40 per cent of streetlights have been changed to LED lights and another 60 per cent of sodium vapour streetlights are identified. We will call for tenders. We will be able to give good streetlighting with minimal spending”, said BBMP Special Commissioner Ravindra.
