BAGALKOT: A suo motu case has been registered against police personnel attached to the Badami police station for allegedly assaulting a SDPI activist. The move comes after the Police Complaints Authority took the matter seriously.

Syed Basha, the SDPI activist, had reportedly put up a WhatsApp status picture of Prime Minister Narendra Modi with Palestine President Mahmoud Abbas during his recent visit to New York for the UN General Assembly. Following this, a complaint was lodged against the SDPI activist at the Badami police station.

Syed Basha was called for questioning and was allegedly assaulted by police sub-inspector Vitthal Naik and some police constables. The issue came to light only after Basha was released from jail on bail on September 24.

Leaders of SDPI shared images of the bruises on Basha’s body on social media and condemned the police action. Following this, a suo motu case was registered.
