Ambergris worth over Rs 1 crore seized, 3 arrested in Bidar

BIDAR: The Bidar police have arrested three men hailing from Ratnagiri in Maharashtra and seized 980 gm of ambergris worth over Rs 1 crore from them. The three men had illegally brought the ambergris from Goa to Bidar.

Ambergris, or sperm whale vomit, is a solid, waxy, flammable substance which is produced in the digestive system of sperm whales. While it is used for medicines and potions and as a spice, it was also used to stabilize the scent of fine perfumes. Ambergris usually floats and washes ashore.

In the last 15 days, the Bidar police have soved 28 cases of theft, including cattle, registered at 12 police stations, and arrested 28 people so far. The police have also recovered valuables worth Rs 53 lakh, cash of Rs 7,76 lakh, 396 gm of gold worth Rs 23.91 lakh, 320 gm of silver, six pumpsets, seven vehicles and liquor.
