BENGALURU: Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar today announced that the government has made it mandatory to celebrate Kannada Rajyotsava on November 1 in all schools, colleges, industries and corporations including IT and BT companies.

Speaking to the media after performing Ayudha Puja at his Sadashivanagar residence, Shivakumar emphasized that November 1 is a memorable day, marking the 50th anniversary of the state’s formation. He urged institutions to celebrate it with fervour, on the lines of Independence Day.

He also said compulsory hoisting of the Kannada flag in private and government schools and cultural events must be organized. Institutions must post their celebrations and activities on a designated number. He stressed that learning Kannada is mandatory for everyone in Karnataka and warned Kannada organizations not to misuse the compulsory flag hoisting directives, cautioning against pressurizing or intimidating factories and companies.

Kannada organizations have been told not to threaten anyone. The Deputy CM also warned that action will be taken against such organizations if any such pressure is imposed.

“All schools, colleges, industries and companies including IT/BT companies in Bengaluru and the rest of Karnataka are required to celebrate Kannada Rajyotsava on Nov 1 by hoisting the state flag and organising cultural events,” he said while speaking to reporters.

“Programmes must be conducted to create awareness about Kannada for the younger generations. Outsiders make up for 50 pc of Bengaluru and we need to create opportunities for them to learn Kannada. This government order is in this backdrop,” he added.

“IT/BT companies must at least hoist the Kannada flag and celebrate. All the corporate houses and industries must share photos of the celebration to BBMP on the specified WhatsApp number. Karnataka is celebrating 70th Kannada Rajyotsava and it is the duty of everyone in Karnataka to learn Kannada. I am announcing this decision as a Bengaluru Development Minister,” he said.

“This is a government order, but that doesn’t give a licence to pro-Kannada organisations to take law into their hands. Strict action will be taken if they use force,” he warned.

Asked when the Cabinet sub-committee on misappropriation of funds in Covid management will start its proceedings, he said, “It was decided on Thursday, will keep you updated on the next steps.” Asked about devolution of tax funds to the state from the Centre, he said he would talk about it after Vijayadashami. The DCM wished the people of the state on the occasion of Vijayadashami. (ANI)
