CHIKKODI: A man was burnt alive after his car caught fire and was completely gutted near Jainapura village in Chikkodi taluk on Tuesday night. The car was found off the road in a field and only the bones of the driver were found inside.

The police traced the car owner with the help of the chassis number. The deceased was identified as Fairoz Badagaon, a resident of Mulla Plot in Chikkodi who was a businessman and Congress worker. The incident occurred around 1 am when he was returning to Chikkodi from Belagavi.

Legislative Council member Prakash Hukkeri, who visited the spot on Wednesday, expressed his displeasure about the working of the police and took the Chikkodi Deputy SP and police sub-inspector to task. He said thefts are increasing and questioned how a car caught fire on the highway.

He also said the police should hand over the investigation to the Corps of Detectives (CoD) and added that he would speak to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah regarding the issue.
