RAICHUR: A Class 3 boy was allegedly brutally beaten with a belt, had chilli power thrown in his eyes and kept locked in a dark room at an ashram here over a trivial reason. The boy was rescued by his mother and is now undergoing treatment in hospital.

Shravan Kumar is studying in a government school and was staying at the Ramakrishna Vivekananda Ashram at Uday Nagar on Station Road here as he hails from a poor family. It is alleged that one P Venugopal Swamy of the ashram carried out the brutal assault on the boy.

Venugopal Swamy, who runs the ashram, has been arrested.

When the boy’s mother unexpectedly visited the ashram to see her son, she came to know about what had happened and admitted him to a hospital. The parents have alleged that Venugopal Swamy tortures children in the name of providing them shelter. A total of 12 students stay in the ashram and it is alleged that the other children are also tortured.

A case has been registered at the Raichur West police station have arrested Venugopal Swamy. The parents have demanded strict action against him. Further investigation is under way.
