HUBBALLI, BIDAR, CHIKKAMAGALUR: Four people died and several were injured in accidents involving trucks in different parts of the state on Saturday.
Four people died on the spot after a truck was involved in a serial accident with two cars near Belligatti on the outskirts of Hubballi on the Bengaluru-Pune highway. Three of the deceased — Manikanta (26), Pavan (23) and Chandan (21) — were travelling in one of the cars from Hassan to Goa. The other deceased Harish Kumar (34) was in the another car which was on its way to Shirdi from Bengaluru.
Four others who sustained injuries in the serial accident were shifted to KIMS hospital in Hubballi. Dharwad SP Dr Gopal Byakod, who visited the spot, said, “The accident occurred around 4 am today when one car first hit a stationary car. Four people were injured and they were shifted to hospital.
“By the time they reached the hospital, the truck hit the five other people who were standing at the accident site. Four of them died on the spot. The other injured was also shifted to hospital and his condition is said to be serious. There were foggy conditions at that time and the truck driver has been taken into custody. Manikanta, Chandan and Pavan are from Arkalgud in Hassan. The other deceased Harish Kumar is from Bengaluru”, the SP said.
In another incident, a truck rearended a car and overturned on the road near Tadola village in Basavakalyan taluk of Bidar district. Five people who were travelling in the car sustained serious injuries and were shifted to the government taluk hospital. They were on their way from Basavakalyan to Tadola when the accident occurred. The Basavakalyan traffic police have registered a case.
The driver and cleaner of a truck sustained injuries after it crashed into a rock by the roadside at the sixth bend on Charmadi Ghat in Chikkamagalur district on Saturday.
The truck was carrying a consignment of cement from Chikkamagalur to Mangaluru. The driver lost control due to foggy conditions and there was a traffic jam on the road for some time as a result of the accident. The Belthangady police have registered a case.
