BENGALURU: With the upward revision of power tariffs, people are lining up to register for the Gruha Jyothi free power scheme up to a maximum of 200 units per month. Earlier, citizens had not shown much interest in enrolling for the Gruha Jyothi scheme and were reluctant to register.

As the months passed and people started getting higher power bills, more and more started registering for the Gruha Jyothi. Till September, about 81.16 per cent power consumers have enrolled in the state and only 19 per cent of subscribers remain to submit applications. The number of those availing free power under different schemes has reached 1.58 crore families, including 1.44 crore people who have enrolled for Gruha Jyothi till the end of September.

The total number of power customers getting free electricity includes those availing benefits under Bhagya Jyoti, Kutira Jyoti, and Amrut Jyoti schemes. Due to the recent increase in electricity bills, those who were initially not interested are now showing much interest in registering.

The government has not set any deadline for registration under the Gruha Jyothi scheme and with only 19 per cent of consumers remaining to be covered, it is expected to be completed in the coming days.
