BENGALURU: The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), which had taken up construction of modern precast toilets and washrooms in the city under the Shubra Bengaluru scheme, has spent crores on them, giving rise to suspicion of a scam.
The Palike approved a plan to construct 46 modern toilets at a total cost of Rs 281 crore with each toilet estimated to cost Rs 6.1 crore. In the first phase of the work in 2021, 10 such toilets were constructed in the city and 36 remain to be constructed.
However, the high cost of the toilets has given rise to suspicion of corruption in the project. In 2015, the BBMP had decided to set up e-toilets at a cost of Rs 5 lakh each, but they have not been of much use. Now, questions are being raised why the Palike is spending crores on setting up the modern toilets.
