BENGALURU: Following by the Covid-19 guidelines issued by the Union Health Ministry on Wednesday, amid of sudden spurt of the disease in some parts of the world, Covid protocols are coming back in.
Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) Special Commissioner Thrilok Chandra said, “We are planning to impose mandatory mask rule following the increasing Covid cases in China and other countries”. He said the civic body is in touch with the Covid task force to implement precautionary measures. There may be an increase in Covid cases during New Year as tourists will arrive in the city in large numbers, he noted.
In the first phase, BBMP will raise awareness about wearing masks without imposing a fine. Wearing mask is mandatory in markets, malls, theatres, parks and other public places. There is a likelihood of making wearing of masks in public transport like Metro, buses and trains.

The BBMP has also decided to monitor international travellers and conduct random Covid test on 2 per cent of total travellers, as was being done earlier. A special meeting of the Covid experts committee will be held, he added.
Thrilok Chandra said the Union Health Ministry has directed states to focus on genomic sequencing. “Most of the people are not following Covid-appropriate behaviour. Everyone should follow Covid guidelines in the interest of one’s health and their families. Elders who have comorbidities should keep a watch on their health status”, he suggested.
The commissioner also urged those who had not yet taken the second vaccination or booster dose to do so immediately. “It is better to take measures voluntarily. In the last two years, people have suffered much. They have lost family members and loved ones. If anyone has health issues, consult doctors immediately. Basic Covid-appropriate behaviour will be back in focus”, he added.
“Based on the evolving situation and detailed recommendations, we will draft guidelines accordingly. After two years of the pandemic, the economy is returning to normalcy. Currently, there is no need to worry, but BBMP will take all necessary precautionary measures and people have to follow Covid guidelines”, he stressed.
