BENGALURU: The city’s streetlighting system will now get a smart touch. The Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) has planned to install more than five lakh LED streetlights in all five zones of the city.

Not only installation of streetlights, but the responsibility of their maintenance also has been given to private agencies. The vendors will have to fix a streetlight which is not working within 48 hours or else fine will be imposed.

To give respite to people due to dark roads and nonfunctional streetlights, the GBA has planned to install total more than five lakh LED streetlights in all five zones of the city. Already installation of more than three lakh new LED lights has been completed, and more will be installed.

Further, a hi-tech system has been introduced for maintenance of street lights with one centralised control room in each of the five zones. Through 24,677 control units, the functioning of streetlights will be monitored. This system will help to immediately detect which road’s light needs fixing and to take up repair work within 48 hours.

The GBA has decided to impose fines on the agencies concerned if a nonfunctional streetlight is not repaired within the stipulated time Along with that, more than 50 per cent electricity saving is expected due to use of LED lights. Due to this, GBA also has target of saving Rs 100-150 crore annually.

“We have been constantly getting complaints about streetlights not working and among complaints from the public, most are related to streetlights and their maintenance. Our plan is to ensure that with the use of new technology, nonfunctional streetlights are fixed before complaints are raised. Also, about 2.75 lakh streetlights, which are not LED, will be replaced. About 45,000 new LED streetlights have been installed wherever necessary along with the existing 1.97 lakh LED lights. Totally, we will have five lakh LED lights across Bengaluru”, said Greater Bengaluru Development Minister Krishna Byre Gowda.

“We are employing IoT (Internet Of Things) for maintenance of streetlights and 24,677 control and monitoring devices (one for every 100 CCMS). Nonfunctioning streetlights should be fixed within 48 hours of a report being generated by the control units”, the minister said.
