FDA raids 45 ice cream manufacturing units, finds expired items

BENGALURU: In a major shock for ice cream lovers, raids have revealed that expired food materials are being used in ice cream manufacturing units.

Officials of the Food and Drug Administration raided 45 ice cream manufacturing units on the instructions of Health Minister U T Khader and expired food and lapses were detected during the raids.

Ice cream units raided and items seized:

  1. Savad Ice Cream Factory, Jayanagar 3rd Block: Found using expired Britannia biscuit, Nandini Samruddhi milk, tea and coffee mix, coconut powder, seized, labeling defect. FSSAI Act 2006, 2011 violation – legal action initiated.
  2. M N Enterprises, Bilekahalli, Bannerghatta Road, BBMP South Zone: In the said ice cream unit expired Plain Caustic Caramel, Nestle Milkmaid, Milky Mist Khova – use of expired / unlabeled material — legal action initiated.
  3. Jaimini Ice Cream Factory, Raichur: Ice cream manufacturing in unclean, unhygienic environment – notice issued.
  4. John Ice Cream, near bus stand, Mysuru: Manufacturing without licence, ice cream and raw material worth Rs.20,000 without label seized.

Inspections continues across the state, with officials warning of strict legal action against violators.
