BENGALURU: Lakhs of people travel daily to Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) and get stuck in traffic jams. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has taken up a new vehicle overpass project to prevent traffic jams just ahead of the airport.

Traffic is major  problem for passengers travelling between Hebbal and Kempegowda international airport. During peak hours and when it rains, the traffic jams stretech for kilometers. To reduce traffic near the airport, the NHAI is constructing an overpass at Sadahalli junction at cost of about Rs 35 crore and work is already going on at a brisk pace.

Further, due to traffic signal at Sadahalli junction, vehicles would pile up and the vehicle overpass will reduce traffic jams. Work is going on at night time in ‘cut and cover’ model and it is targetted to complete the work by February 2027 ahead of the Aero India air show. Once complete, the airport road will become completely signal-free.

“Sadahalli Gate is the only signalised junction on the 22-km stretch from Hebbal to the airport. After a 1.5-year study, we decided to construct the overpass for vehicles going towards Sadahalli. Tenders were finalised and the work has already started. We are creating an additional lane to ease airport traffic after discussions with the Joint Commissioner of Police (traffic) and depending on the rain, we will take up excavation work” said, K B Jayakumar, project director of NHAI.
