- September 10 Deadline for GPS Installation on Garbage Vehicles
BENGALURU: The pilot project of installing GPS tracking systems on garbage collection auto tippers in Bommanahalli Assembly Constituency of Bengaluru South City Corporation — implemented under the CSR initiative of Intel Technology India Pvt Ltd using ‘Brain Above’ technology — has been successful, stated Commissioner K N Ramesh on Thursday.
On August 13, GPS tracking was installed on 36 garbage collection auto tippers at Atal Bihari Vajpayee Stadium in HSR Layout. Local residents and NGOs have appreciated that black spots have reduced considerably over the past three weeks due to daily door-to-door waste collection.
In this backdrop, the commissioner instructed officials to mandatorily install GPS on all 208 garbage collection auto tippers in the Bommanahalli zone by September 10, and to launch full-scale tracking across the Bommanahalli Assembly Constituency from September 11.
Auto tracking via ‘Brain Above’ app
In the coming days, after GPS tracking is installed on autos across 9 wards of Bommanahalli Assembly Constituency — including HSR Layout, Hongasandra, and Mangammanapalya — and route mapping is completed, the public will be able to track the movement of autos assigned to their streets and access other details through the ‘Brain Above’ app, he informed. In narrow lanes where vehicle movement is not possible, vehicles will halt at nearby spots for ten minutes and collect household waste by blowing whistles.
Evening waste collection and warning to street vendors
The commissioner directed contractors to deploy garbage collection auto tippers at night in and around high-density black spot areas to collect waste. He instructed officials to create awareness through marshals among street vendors—including those on roads around Meenakshi Mall and other commercial zones—to hand over waste to collection autos free of cost, instead of dumping it on roadsides.
Heavy fines on vendors dumping garbage on streets
To stop vendors from dumping garbage on roadsides at night, he directed that awareness be created among shopkeepers in commercial zones for two to three days to hand over waste to night-shift autos. If violations continue thereafter, a nominal fine should be levied initially, followed by heavy fines and vehicle seizure if repeated.
Gang work after door-to-door waste collection
He instructed officials and contractors that after door-to-door garbage collection, pourakarmikas and vehicle drivers must compulsorily engage in ‘gang work’ (working in teams of 10) for five days a week until 2 pm to clear black spots.
Timely salary payments and appeal to citizens
The commissioner instructed officials to disburse salaries to pourakarmikas, auto drivers, and contract staff on time without any disruptions. He made it clear that contractor bills will be approved strictly based on GPS tracking data. He appealed to the public and traders not to dump garbage anywhere and to cooperate in maintaining city hygiene by handing over waste only to Corporation vehicles.
DGM Manuja, representatives from NGOs Let’s Be The Change, Saahas, HSR Citizen Forum, and garbage collection contractors were present on the occasion.
