BENGALURU: The Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF) has introduced a QR code on Nandini products to prevent counterfeiting and ensure the authenticity of its products. The move comes after several instances of fake Nandini products were detected in the market.

The QR code, initially introduced on ghee packets and bottles, will provide consumers with information about the product’s origin, manufacturing date and market code. To verify the authenticity of the product, consumers can scan the QR code and enter the OTP received on their phone.

KMF plans to extend this initiative to other products, including milk and curd, in the future. According to KMF Managing Director Shivaswamy, the QR code system will help detect counterfeit products and ensure the quality of Nandini products.

“A person by name Dr Sharanya shared a video on social media claiming that Nandini products are not that safe for consumption and that it is not healthy as it contains additives, preservations and other chemicals. She shared fake claims that Nandini products can also cause cancer over extended use”.

“We would like to assure our customers that we maintain all standards laid down by FSSAI. So far, we had not no complaints. We also have an NABL-approved lab where we randomly check our products. Even FSSAI is conducting tests on their own and said all the results are positive. Spreading misinformation is illegal and we have issued notice to the individual. We will also take further legal action. We also request all our customers not to fall for such misinformation”, Shivaswamy added.

Further, he said, “A few months ago, a fake ghee racket was busted in Tamil Nadu. Towards curbing fake products, we have introduced QR code wherein all information about where it was manufactured, dealer and retail trail. This will also enhance consumer satisfaction”.

The introduction of QR codes is seen as a proactive step by KMF to protect its brand and ensure consumer trust. The effectiveness of this initiative remains to be seen, but it is expected to go a long way in curbing the menace of counterfeit products.
