RAICHUR: Devadurga JD(S) MLA Karemma G Nayak has alleged that illegal sand mining mafia threatened her at her home for trying to stop their activities. She met the district deputy commissioner and Police Superintendent, demanding action against the mafia.
Karemma Nayak accused the mafia of intimidating her for trying to stop their activities in the area. She stated that sand was being transported in lorries without tenders, and those using tractors were being intimidated. She claimed that Srinivas Nayiak, Ravi, Viresh Gowda, Amaresh, Vasu, and Hanumantha, among others, came to her residence in the police quarters and threatened her.
She urged the Chief Minister and Home Minister to take notice of the situation and take necessary action. The police have registered cases against the accused. Karemma Nayak warned she won’t back down and will raise her voice in the assembly session.
Raichur SP Arunangshu Giri said 37 cases have been registered in 20 days, and police are taking action. He added that the police can’t tackle the issue alone and have asked the DC and Mining Department to convene a sand committee meeting. The SP that they have registered several suo motu cases and will continue to take action against those involved in illegal sand mining.
“I have received a complaint from MLA Karemma G Nayak regarding illegal sand mining. We have registered 37 cases in the past 20 days and are taking action. The police are conducting regular patrols, but we need the support of other departments to tackle the issue. I have asked the District Collector and Mining Department to convene a sand committee meeting to address the issue. We have registered several suo motu cases and will continue to take action against those involved in illegal sand mining”, he said.
