Compulsory helmet rule enforced in Kolar from December 1

Two-wheeler riders without helmets were fined and vehicles impounded.

KOLAR: The Kolar police have made helmets mandatory for two-wheeler riders and also the pillion riders from December 1 and have launched a drive to enforce the rule. Police personnel were seen on the roads, fining riders without helmets and impounding their vehicles.

Riders who didn’t have helmets were given helmets and allowed to go after paying fines. The police also distributed roses to bike riders who were wearing helmets, appreciating their responsible behavior. The drive is aimed at reducing bike accidents and promoting road safety.

Kolar SP Nikhil B said, “The helmet drive has started from today, and we expect everyone to cooperate. We will make it mandatory for pillion riders as well. The drive is aimed at reducing bike accidents and promoting road safety. We urge the public to wear helmets and avoid fines”.

The police have urged the public to cooperate with the drive and wear helmets to avoid fines and ensure their safety. They have been conducting awareness campaigns at bus stands, schools, and colleges, emphasizing the importance of wearing helmets. The response to the drive has been encouraging, with around 75 per cent of two-wheeler riders wearing helmets on Monday.

As per statistics, 284 people died in bike accidents in 2024, and 238 have died so far in 2025. The police are serious about enforcing the helmet rule and will make it mandatory for pillion riders as well. Meanwhile, some helmet vendors are taking advantage of the situation, selling helmets at exorbitant prices.
