HUBBALLI: Seven people have been arrested for kidnapping an engineering student and demanding a ransom of Rs 1 crore for his release.

Garib Nawaz Mulla, a resident of Mantur Road in the city, had earned about Rs 11 crore by playing online casino games along with his friend Dilawar. Nawaz also used to spend lavishly. He had even discussed about his winnings with his friends.

On August 6, Nawaz was kidnapped from near the Decathlon store on Gokul Road and a case was registered at the Bendigeri police station. The kidnappers called Nawaz’s father and demanded a ransom of Rs 1 crore for his release. They then scaled it down to Rs 15 lakh.

Seven people were arrested for kidnapping Nawaz.

The police traced the ransom calls and finally arrested Mohammed Arif, Imran, Abdul Karim, Hussainsab, Imran Madarali, Tousif and Mohammed Razak from near Kittur in the district. Four teams had been formed to trace the kidnappers.
