Youth who stabbed girl in college and attempted suicide now out of danger

BENGALURU: Two days after a girl student was stabbed to death by a youth for rejecting him, at the Presidency College campus in Rajanukunte, it has now come to light that the accused Pavan Kalyan and the victim Layasmita had know each other for at least two years and Pavan had even posted their pictures on his Instagram account.

Bengaluru Rural district SP Mallikarjun Baladandi said the accused is out of danger and is responding to treatment.

On Wednesday, Bengaluru Rural district Superintendent of Police Mallikarjun Baladandi said, “The accused Pavan Kalyan, who is said to boyfriend of Layasmita, is now out of danger and responding to the treatment at Bowring and Lady Curzon Hospital, as per the doctors. He has undergone a surgery in the chest part. He did not stab himself deep in the chest, so luckily he survived. The doctors have treated the injuries on his hands too. He is recovering, but he is not in a position to speak, so we will record his statement after he recovers”. His parents too haven’t been allowed to meet him, he added.

The SP said that Layasmita’s mother has told the police that Layasmita and Pavan are from Mulbagal taluk and were in love from the last two years. Pavan is a relative of Layasmita, but his parents had warned him not to have any sort of relationship with her. But he defied them and continued his relationship with Layasmita.

Layasmita had joined BE (Computer Engineering) at Presidency University just a month ago. Pavan, an engineering student at Nrupathunga University, had put photos on his Instagram account and when Layasmita’s mother came to about about it, the girl gave excuses to her mother. Her mother had warned her and told her to focus on studies. Within a week after this, Layasmita was murdered by Pavan.

The police are also gathering information from the college management board. A team of the state women’s commission also visited the school on Tuesday and gathered information.

According to police sources, Pavan waited for 40 minutes on the college campus and then went near Layasmita’s classroom. He spoke to her for about 15 minutes after which she brought her bag outside. In a span of five minutes, he stabbed her deep in the her chest part five times, leaving her soaked in blood on the floor.

Pavan had also tattooed her name on his chest with a heart symbol. He stabbed himself right on the tattoo and then cut his hand with the knife. Police said there was no conversation between the two for two days prior to the incident and it is still not clear where Pavan got the knife from.

Layasmita’s mother Rajeshwari said, “Presidency University’s negligence has led to my daughter’s murder. The security guards in the college question parents 10 times before allowing them inside. Then how was the boy allowed inside? If the boy had been able to carry a knife, it shows there was sheer negligence. I have filed a complaint at the Rajanukunte police station to take action against the accused and the administration of Presidency University. I want justice for my daughter”.

“I have no education, but I put her in a reputed college for her bright future. I do labour work our livelihood and my husband died four years ago. Layasmita was everything to me and our big hope. I have two more daughters. This should not repeat with any other girl”, Rajeshwari said.
