BENGALURU: The Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB), which has taken up work on the ambitious Cauvery Stage-V water supply project to solve the drinking water problem in the city, hopes that the project will completed by next year.
Bengaluru is developing at a rapid pace over the years and, as the city expands, providing drinking water to new localities has become a challenge for the water board. Presently, Cauvery water is being supplied to the city through Cauvery Stages I, II, III and IV projects and 135 crore liters of water is being supplied every day. Despite this, the city is facing a shortage of 75 crore liters daily.
According to the BWSSB, once the fifth phase project is completed, the water shortage will be completely solved. Chairman of BWSSB, Dr Ram Prasat Manohar, said the Cauvery Stage-V plan has been prepared keeping in mind the entire city, including 110 villages which were added to the city and keeping in view the population in 2030. All the processes have been completed and the BWSSB has hastened the work and it is expected to be completed by April 2024, he said.
Dr Ram Prasat said about 29 tmcft of water have been reserved for the people of Bengaluru for the whole year. It has been proposed to increase the capacity of the city to utilise the surplus water within the available 29 tmcft. There are 11,000 defunct borewells in Bengaluru and the the board plans to repair them ahead of the summer season.
