BELAGAVI: Upset over constant harassment by her in-laws to repay some loans, a woman hanged her three-year-old son to death from her saree and later committed suicide by hanging from the same saree, at Peeranwadi Patil Gali here on Monday. The deceased were identified as Prema Nagesh Talwar and Bhuvan.

Prema got married to Nagesh Talwar of Hudali village in the taluk six years ago and they were living in a joint family at Mazgaon. During that time, Nagesh had borrowed loans of Rs 4 lakh to help out the family, but his mother and younger brother had allegedly used the money for personal benefit, leading to domestic disputes.

Three years ago, Nagesh, along with his wife and son, shifted to a rented house at Peeranwadi Patil Gali and had joined work at a factory at Udyambagh for a monthly salary of Rs 10,000. However, his mother, younger brother and sister-in-law would constantly pressure him to clear the loans.

Over the last few days, Nagesh’s family members had visited his house and created a ruckus about clearing the loans. When Prema told them that they were not able to make ends meet with Nagesh’s salary, her in-laws snatched her gold ornaments given by her parents and assaulted her. Upset over this, Prema strangulated her son and hanged herself, police said.

On receiving information about her death, Prema’s parents rushed to the house and took her in-laws to task, blaming them for Prema’s death. They also almost came to blows near the BIMS hospital mortuary when the post-mortem examination was being conducted. A case has been registered and further investigation is under way.
