Woman commits suicide after land acquired for Ambedkar Bhavan construction

The woman committed suicide after part of her land was acquired by the district authorities.

CHAMARAJANAGAR: A woman committed suicide by hanging from a tree on her farm land after a part of her property was acquired by the district administration for the construction of an Ambedkar Bhavan, at Doddalatthur in Hanur taluk on Saturday. The deceased was identified as Rajamma (56).

Rajamma was in possession of 90 cents of land which she got as her share of ancestral property on which the family was carrying out farming activities. However, last week, revenue officials suddenly appeared on her land and acquired 20 cents for the Ambedkar Bhavan.

The family had protested at the site last week.

A board put up on the land says the piece of land has been reserved Kempaiahnahatti villagers for the Social Welfare Department under Sec 71 of the Karnataka Land Revenue Act, 1964, towards construction of a Dr B R Ambedkar Bhavan. Upset over the development, Rajamma committed suicide.

Angry villagers staged a protest on Saturday.

Angry villagers staged a protest along with the body, insisting that the district officials shoud visit the spot. A case has been registered at the Rampur police station. On receiving information, Hanur Congress MLA Manjunath rushed to Doddalatthur and offered condolences to the family. He also said that in light of the suicide, it would not be right to construct the Ambedkar Bhavan on that land and assured the family that the land will be registered in their name.
