Woman approaches police over husband’s demand for wife-swapping

BENGALURU: A woman in Bengaluru has filed a complaint against her husband for forcing her into wife swapping. The woman, who has approached the Basavanagudi women’s police station, alleged that her husband Poornachandra assaulted and tortured her for not cooperating with wife swapping and not fulfilling his demands.

The complainant got married to Poornachandra (name changed) a year ago and her parents gave him dowry in the form of money, ornaments and silver items as per their demand. The woman claimed that her family spent Rs 30 lakh on the wedding, but he again demanded Rs 10 lakh to repay a loan, which she refused. However, her brother had already given Rs 2 lakh to Poornachandra. He then started torturing her to bring the remaining amount of Rs 8 lakh.

The victim claimed in the complaint that she was frequently beaten with a belt to force her to agree to wife swapping with his friends. He continued to harass her by showing obscene videos and even attempted to kill her by suffocating her with a pillow, but failed. The husband’s family is still demanding more dowry, she alleged.

An FIR has been registered against the husband and six of his family members in this regard under the Dowry Prohibition Act.
