Undertrial prisoner commits suicide at Bagalkot jail during Independence Day celebrations

BAGALKOT: An undertrial prisoner committed suicided by hanging himself with a towel from a window at the Bagalkot district jail on Monday.

To mark the 75th Independence Day, the jail staff and prisoners had assembled for hoisting of the Tricolour. Manjunath Kuri (38) went to the bathroom on the pretext of attending nature’s call and committed suicide around 8.30 am.

Manjunath, a resident of Mallapura village in Mudhol taluk, was an accused in a POCSO case and was arrested in March. His bail application had been rejected twice and hence, he was upset. He is survived by his wife and two children.
