BENGALURU: The Bangalore Electricity Supply Company (BESCOM) has taken up an ambitious task of shifting overhead 11 kv power lines underground. But, in the process, the power utility may be creating more problems and exposing people to hazards due to shoddy work being taken up by the contractor in Sahakara Nagar.
While laying underground power cables, there are a host of regulations to be followed. The cables are to be laid at least 1.5-2 metres below the ground and insulated inside PVC pipers for safety reasons. In Sahakara Nagar, trenches dug for laying the cables over the last six months are barely 0.5 to 1 foot deep!
While it is evident that regulations are not being followed, the Bescom authorities seem to have turned a blind eye to the goings-on.
“If the road has to be dug for some other work, there is every possibility that the power cables may get cut. It also poses a huge danger to life. Apart from this, power supply will be affected in all areas running the length of the cable and gadgets at home can also get damaged” — Energy expert Dr Suresh Babu.
The cables are not supposed to be left lying on the road. But the Bescom authorities do not seem to have kept tabs on the contractor. Local residents hope that the authorities will take note of the happenings and rectify the issues before any major mishap.
