Devotees fling coconuts in the ari after tulabhara of children.

BELAGAVI: You may well know about the tulabhara custom where a person is weighed against cereals, pulses or fruits which is later donated to a temple.

At the Obaleshwara temple fair at Giriyala village in Belagavi district, tulabhara of young children is performed with a twist on Vijayadashami day. On Wednesday too, the custom was followed with full enthusiasm.

Children are weighed against coconuts which are then flung in the air outside the temple. Though the significance of the custom is not known, it sure is unique. Some people even collected the thrown coconuts by the sackfuls, braving the barrage.
