BENGALURU: The recent terrorist attack on tourists in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, has sent shockwaves across the country, affecting not only tourists, but also the local tourism industry.

Jammu and Kashmir Valley is known as ‘Heaven on Earth’ for its breathtaking glaciers, blue lakes, forests, and lush green meadows. Kashmir attracts millions of visitors every summer. However, the attack has dealt a significant blow to the tourism sector, with many cancelling their trips due to safety concerns.

Many tourists who had booked their trips through travel agencies are now cancelling their bookings for the next 4-5 months. This has caused concern among travel agents and their businesses.

Travel agents are finding it difficult to get response from hotels in Kashmir regarding room cancellations and refunds. The hotels are not providing clear information about refunding service charges for sightseeing. This is causing tension among travel agents, who are struggling to manage the cancellations and refunds.

Rekha, proprietor of Keerthana Vacations, a travel agency, said, “Many tourists have planned to go to Kashmir. We are receiving calls from tourists after the Pahalgam terror attack asking to cancel their bookings. Due to security concerns, they are postponing their plans. We are also coordinating with the agents in Kashmir. We are also facing a dilemma. We have to think about the safety of our clientst oo. As it is peak season, they are not refunding. Clients can postpone their travel dates. Even travel agents in Kashmir are also confused about taking any decision”.

Ananthalakshmi of Aquila Holidays, another travel agency, said, “About 15 families were planning to go to Kashmir in May, but after the terror attack, people are avoiding taking risks with their lives. They are cancelling bookings and asking for refunds. The terror attack has really affected travel agencies as people are really scared to travel to that state.”
