UDUPI: Three students of Manipal Institute of Technology (MIT) were washed away in the Arabian Sea at Hoode Beach on Sunday.
The deceased students were identified as Nishant (19), Shanmukh (19), and Srikar(19).
Around 20 students from MIT had gone on an outing. They dived into the water without realising the depth of the sea and the currents. As it was high tide, there were huge waves crashing. But the students had gone into chest-deep water and three of them washed away into the sea.
The other students shouted for help, and local fishermen came to their rescue. Among the three who were washed away, Nishant and Shanmukh were immediately rescued from the sea and sent to Manipal KMC. But, according to doctors, they were brought dead. The body of another student, Srikar, had washed up on sea shore on Monday.
“Students come to the beach for fun and dive into the deep sea. The waves are usually high on certain days, but they are unaware of this. We see so many incidents in and around Udupi. College should play an important role in creating awareness. There is a difference between swimming in the sea and elsewhere. More public awareness is required. The district administration should look into the matter,” said Ganesh, a local.
A case has been registered at Malpe police station.
