UDUPI: Puttige Math seer Sugunendra Theertha Swami has defended the decision to confer the title ‘Bharat Bhagya Vidhta’ on Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The title was conferred on the PM during his recent visit to Udupi.

Speaking to Public TV, the seer said, “We felt that PM Modi is in fact the Bharat Bhagya Vidhta. The title suits him 100 per cent. His policies, decisions, and political acumen have changed India’s perspective. He has opened the doors of India’s destiny. His foreign policy has earned India great respect globally.”

This comes after questions were raised by netizens over conferring the title on PM Modi. The seer added that the title was not given lightly and that PM Modi’s work and achievements warranted it. He also welcomed the ensuing debate and discussion on the issue, saying it’s healthy for society.

The seer said added, “We were thinking of honoring him with the title ‘Bharat Bhaskara’, but this name came to our mind just before the citation was printed. Whoever serves the country well, deserves this title. Awards like Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan are given to achievers in various fields. The title should match their work and achievements. It’s natural to have discussions and debates in society. It’s good to discuss and debate”.

He also mentioned that he had consulted lawyers to ascertain if it is permissible to confer such a title on the Prime Minister, and they opined that it can be done.
