Smaller states will be victims if ‘One Nation, One Election’ is implemented: Congress MLC BK Hariprasad

BENGALURU: Expressing concern over the Centre’s decision to introduce ‘One Nation, One Election’, for which the government constituted a committee headed by former President Ram Nath Kovind, Karnataka Congress MLC B K Hariprasad said that it was unfortunate that the BJP has demeaned the position of the President and smaller states will be victim if this was implemented.

Karnataka Congress MLC B K Hariprasad said, “They (BJP) are demeaning the position of the President. It’s unfortunate that NDA especially BJP has stooped to this level and appointed a committee for ‘One Nation and One Election’. This country has a vast diversity…The smallest states will be the victims. There are possibilities of toppling the government in smaller states…”

MLC B K Hariprasad said that the President of India oversees all kind of political activities and BJP had overlooked the President.

He further said, “This country has a vast diversity and culture. People with different religion, caste, language, race live peacefully in this country and they have a choice of electing their government. Their is vast disparity of population and the size of the states. Before appointing the committee the Centre should have discussed in the Parliament and assembly.”

‘One Nation, One Election’ refers to the idea of holding simultaneous elections for the Lok Sabha and state assemblies. The idea was also endorsed by President Ram Nath Kovind, in his customary address to the joint sitting of Parliament after the beginning of second term of Prime Minister Modi.Many key BJP leaders have hailed the concept of ‘One Nation, One Election’ saying that the idea behind simultaneous elections is to save the country’s resources, time and expenditure.
