10 fans of RCB die in stampede at Chinnaswamy Stadium ahead of victory celebration

Those who collapsed at the stadium were rushed to hospitals.

BENGALURU: Ten fans of Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) died and over 20 injured in a stampede-like situation at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium on Wednesday where the Bengaluru team was scheduled to arrive for a grand celebration following the victory in the Indian Premier League.

Dramatic scenes could be witnessed with security personnel carrying out those who had collapsed. They were rushed to Bowring and Lady Curzon Hospital where doctors said three people had died. One of the victims was identified as Divya, a resident of Yelahanka, while another was identified as Divyanshika, a Class 9 student.

Following the incident, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah visited Bowring and Lady Curzon Hospital and inquired about the condition of the injured. While five people died at Bowring Hospital, four died at Vydehi Hospital on Vittal Malya Road and one at Manipal Hospital.

At the stadium, police personnel could be seen making announcements on the public address system appealing to fans not to come near the stadium. The were also appealing women and children to stay away saying that the stadium was already full.

Some of those who had collapsed as they were unable to breathe were also taken to Manipal Hosptial. Ambulances had a tough time entering the stadium as fans thronged the roads outside. At least 15 fans were being treated at Bowring Hospital.
