BENGALURU: A security guard was arrested for stealing money from a Union Bank of India ATM at Wilson Garden in the city and cash of Rs 14 lakh was recovered from him on Tuesday.

The accused, identified as Deepankar Nomosudar, is hailing from Assam. He came to Bengaluru just a few months ago in search a job and joined as a security guard at a Union Bank ATM kiosk. Over a period of six months, he stole Rs 19 lakh as he wanted to marry his girlfriend and lead a comfortable life.

Police said Deepankar wanted earn more money quickly, settle down with his girlfriend and start his own business.

The security guard was captured on CCTV camera siphoning off money from the ATM.

He used to behave in a friendly manner those who came to the ATM to withdraw money and would convince them that he would help them withdraw money. He would close the ATM doors after midnight and used to withdraw money from the ATM.

The Union Bank staff got suspicious when the accounts didn’t tally. The theft by security guard came to light after they checked the CCTV camera footage and a case was registered at Wilson Garden police station.

Deepankar had amassed Rs 19 lakh in cash and fled to his home state Assam with the money.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central) R Srinivas Gowda said, “The accused Deepankar would somehow gain the confidence with those who came to the ATM. On November 17, he closed the ATM door on the pretext of filling the ATM with cash. He then fled to his hometown in Assam with the cash. The police have seized Rs 14 lakh from him while he had spent remained money. He wanted to start a hotel business and lead a luxurious life. He believed that no will be able to trace him to his remote village in Assam. The police took seven days to trace his whereabouts in Assam. Further information will be revealed after the investigation”.
