Washington [US], October 31 (ANI): Samsung has reportedly commenced development on a massive 17-inch foldable tablet that shrinks down to an 8-inch form factor when folded.
As per GSM Arena, the revelation stems from a source who originally stated in late August that a 17-inch foldable tablet was in development across multiple versions and test devices, without naming the manufacturer at the time. In a subsequent update, the same source identified the company behind the project, stating that “Samsung has already started.”
According to details shared from the original post, obtained by GSM Arena, the upcoming hardware functions as an 8-inch tablet when closed and expands into a full 17-inch display once unfolded. The tipster noted that additional specifications cannot be shared at this stage.
The exact mechanical design of the 8-inch folded profile remains unconfirmed.
Industry observers note two distinct possibilities: the device could feature a single 17-inch outward-folding screen where only half remains active while closed, or it could utilize an inner 17-inch panel paired with a dedicated 8-inch external cover screen, similar to an enlarged Galaxy Z Fold setup.
While Samsung Display has previously demonstrated large foldable screen prototypes at various industry trade shows, the company’s mobile division has yet to commercialize a product in this segment.
As per GSM Arena, an earlier rumor regarding a foldable device dubbed the Galaxy Z Tab surfaced in 2023 without materializing into a commercial release.
The latest development report arrives amid heightened activity across the broader foldable sector following Apple’s entry with the iPhone Duo.
Samsung has not confirmed official launch timelines, and there is no confirmation on when the reported 17-inch tablet will reach retail availability. (ANI)
