BENGALURU: Retired bureaucrat from the state, M Madan Gopal, has been appointed as chairperson of the board of governors of the Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology (VNIT), Nagpur, by the President.
An official order said Madan Gopal’s appointment will be for a period of three year from September 28 or until further orders. The President made the nomination in her capacity as Visitor of the National Institutes of Technology under the provisions of the National Institutes of Technology, Science Education and Research (NITSER) Act, 2007, the order said.
Madan Gopal, a 1984 batch IAS officer, had served in various capacities including as additional chief secretary to the Karnataka government.
The Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology, Nagpur is one of the premiere National Institutes of Technology in the country. The Union government conferred the deemed-to-be-university status with effect from June 26, 2002. Subsequently, the Centre declared it as an Institute of National Importance along with all other NITs.
Earlier, the institute was known as Visvesvaraya Regional College of Engineering (VRCE). It was established in 1960 under a scheme sponsored by the Centre and the Maharashtra government. The institute offers undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral research programmes (fulltime and parttime) in engineering, architecture and science disciplines.
