BENGALURU: The city police have come up with a unique idea to get mobile phone thieves to give up the stolen phones voluntarily without the fear of legal consequences. The police are planning to install boxes at prominent places where thieves can drop off stolen mobiles.
The drop boxes can also be used by citizens to return mobile phones left behind in buses, Metro trains or other public places.
Thieves usually don’t return mobiles for fear of the police and knowing that they will face jail term. Sometimes, citizens may find someone else’s lost mobile phones left behind mistakenly while travelling on a bus or fallen on the road. Those planning to return the phone may hesitate fearing legal consequences.
Hence, the city police have planned to install boxes in important places in the city. Stolen mobile phones or those found on the road or in bus, it can be deposited in the boxes without the worry of cases being filed against them.
