RAICHUR: A police team which had gone to a tribal hamlet to investigate a case related to rivalry between two families was violently attacked at Mattur thanda in Lingasugur taluk. One person has been arrested in this connection.

Assistant Sub-Inspector Venkappa Naik and Head Constable Ramappa were assaulted and Police Sub-Inspector Venkatesh M from Mudgal police station was also attacked when he arrived at the scene. The attack is linked to an old feud between the Mallappa Chavhan and Ramappa Jadhav families.

Earlier, Mallappa had filed a complaint against Ramappa and his wife Sakkubai, following which the police visited Mattur thanda for inquiry. When the police arrived, Ramappa and Sakkubai allegedly started arguing with them, saying they were biased towards their rivals and had brought the complainant Mallappa along.

The situation escalated, and the accused attacked the police officers, saying they were taking the side of their enemies. The attackers tied up Mallappa’s son, Raghavendra, a KSRP constable, to a post and assaulted him.

Ramappa and Sakkubai attacked the policemen with stones and sticks, injuring them and damaging their uniforms. The attackers also snatched a mobile phone from ASI Venkappa Naik while he was trying to record the incident and blocked a police jeep. PSI Venkatesh was also assaulted, and his shirt was torn. The attackers pulled him by his collar and attempted to assault him further.

The police have registered a case at Mudgal police station, and Ramappa has been taken into custody. Further investigation is under way.
