Outsourced employee of private bank steals Rs 8.65 lakh from ATM and flees, arrested

BELAGAVI: A staffer with a private bank has been arrested for stealing Rs 8.65 lakh from an ATM to purchase a mangalsutra for his wife. The arrested is Krishna Suresh Desai (23), an outsourced employee of HDFC Bank and a resident Jyothi Nagar, Kangralli, in the city.

Krishna was in charge of refilling cash in the ATM and was in possession of its key. On November 26, he and his team filled cash in the ATM and he returned in the evening, opened the ATM with the key, stuffed the bundles of cash into a backpack and left.

Two days later, when the bank staff came to know about the theft, they checked the CCTV footage and were in for a shock. A complaint was lodged with the Market police as Krishna had fled on November 30. The police have managed to recover the mangalsutra, another gold chain and Rs 7.30 lakh in cash from the accused after his arrest.

Police Commissioner Iada Martin Marbaniang, who briefed the media on Tuesday, said, “As per the complaint, Rs 8.65 lakh was stolen from the ATM and after checking CCTV footage, we came to know that the accused was an employee of the bank itself. The accused has been arrested and sent to judicial custody. This is the first case registered against him, but we will take him into our custody and question him about any prior crimes”.
